Happy Thanksgiving!!

A full schedule of County office closings for the Thanksgiving holiday is available online. Also, the County’s Police department offers the following safety tips for holiday shoppers:

  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • If possible, take a friend with you.
  • Have your keys ready when approaching your car.
  • When storing purchased items in your vehicle, be sure that they are out of sight.
  • Keep your car locked and your windows up at all times.
  • Be alert to your surroundings both in stores and walking to your car.
  • Have your cell phone preset to 911 in case of an emergency.
  • Bring only credit cards that need; do not carry large amounts of cash.
  • If someone demands your wallet and/or purse give it to them; your life means more than money.
  • Always report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.
  • If you carry a wallet in your pants pocket place a rubber band around the outer portion to prevent pocket-picking.

 

 

 

Curbside Leaf Collection

As a reminder, James City County will provide one round of curbside leaf collection. Collection dates are as follows and are determined by voting district. District information can be found online or by calling General Services at 757-259-4080.

 

Voting District Collection Dates:

  • North Powhatan/Stonehouse: Dec. 1-3
  • South Powhatan/Jamestown: Dec. 3-10
  • Berkeley/Roberts: Dec. 10-17

 

Leaves must be in clear bags no larger than lawn or leaf-size (40 gallons or less). Bagged leaves must be left curbside by 8 a.m. on the first day of collection in each district. Each street will be collected one time only. Bulky materials such as brush and tree limbs cannot be accepted. Iceburg Skate Rink

The County’s seasonal synthetic ice rink, previously located in New Town, has moved to Mid County Park to offer users more space and an improved skating surface. The Iceburg Skate Rink has opened for the winter season and will operate until March 1, 2015. The rink is open daily – weekdays 5-9 p.m. and weekends noon-9 p.m. The rink is closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. More information, including a complete list of themed skating nights and festivities, is available online.

 

Skating is $8/adult and $7/youth ages 6-17, and the fee includes the skate rental. James City County and Williamsburg residents can skate for $7/adult and $5/youth ages 6-17, including skate rental. Youth ages 5 and younger skate for free. Season passes are also available.

 

During the seasonal operation of the Skate Rink, the park’s basketball courts will be closed through March 7. Please visit our County parks offering basketball court options: Ironbound Park, 150 Magazine Rd., Chickahominy Riverfront Park, 1350 John Tyler Memorial Hwy. and the Warhill Sports Complex, 5700 Warhill Trail which features four courts with lights. Two indoor courts are also available at the James City County Recreation Center, 5301 Longhill Rd. For a one-time fee of $10, County residents can purchase a Daily Card, good for two years. The Card provides free access to the Center fitness equipment and courts on three days – Thursdays, 1-3 p .m.; Fridays, 6-8  p.m.; and Saturdays, 2-5 p.m.
